An outstanding opportunity in the heart of Agenskalns – the historic “Kukaina House”!
In the quiet, historical centre of Agenskalns, a unique property is offered for sale – an elegant villa designed in 1938 by the Latvian architect Arnolds Jakobsons. Built in the functionalist style with refined German architectural influences, the house features clean lines, a logical layout of spaces and an almost aristocratic atmosphere.
Thanks to numerous original elements, this historic gem has preserved its character and spirit to this day. Upon entering, you are greeted by carefully restored oak staircases that rise through a spacious atrium all the way to the roof. Decorative stained-glass windows filter soft, muted light into the hall, creating a special ambiance. In several rooms, original cast-iron radiators remain, discreetly concealed behind elegant wooden panels, while the floors – either the original wooden parquet or carefully laid new parquet – speak of the building’s respectable age and quality. Ceiling heights exceeding 3 metres give a sense of space and freedom. A special highlight is the three outdoor terraces on the upper floors.
The story of Kukaiņa House runs deeper than architecture alone. Its first owner was Vilhelms Kukainis – a manufacturer of mill equipment and a holder of the Order of the Three Stars. In the late 1930s he built this house as a symbol of his family and of a stable Latvian enterprise. During the war he was forced to evacuate to Germany. The Soviet authorities nationalised both the house and the factory, converting the building into a kindergarten. To this day it has remained filled with children’s footsteps and laughter.
Today the historic house awaits a new owner who can continue its story – either as an educational and research institution (cadastral code 1263) or by adapting it for medical, social, artistic or private purposes.
